Class 2: Tenure Culture – Part 2

We tend to hire teachers with the understanding that they will receive tenure as long as they receive satisfactory evaluations and don’t commit any serious offenses. Consequently, tenure becomes something the teacher can lose rather than something the teacher must earn. Treating tenure as the default outcome, instead of as the extraordinary privilege it is, results in some teachers with notable weaknesses or deficiencies getting through the screen. They become our problem teachers later in their careers. The workshop will show how to require teachers to earn tenure by meeting high standards of performance and professional conduct during probation. It will describe the best practices to follow in deciding which probationary teachers should be retained or dismissed at the end of their first and second years of probation. It will provide a method for testing whether a tenure-eligible teacher is likely to maintain high standards of performance and professional conduct after receiving tenure.
