2021 School Law Conference

With the recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions, we have elected to change our annual School Law Conference from a remote video conference to an in-person event. Additional details below. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, July 29!

You are invited to participate in this conference covering the following critically important topics associated with the 2021-22 school year:

Important Legal Updates

What you need to know about critical changes in the law affecting school districts and BOCES for the 2021-22 school year. We will also explore practical strategies for managing discussions of politically contentious subjects in classrooms as well as Board rooms. Join us and learn your legal rights and obligations.

New York Marijuana Use Law and What It Means for Schools

On March 31, 2021, New York became the 15th state to legalize recreational marijuana. The law has wide-ranging implications for schools, impacting issues concerning employee discipline, reasonable accommodations for employees, changes to board policies/regulations, and student discipline.

This program will provide a summary of the law, the timeline for its implementation, and guidance regarding the various implications for schools.

Special Education Breakout Session

COVID-19 and the resulting hybrid and remote instruction has disrupted IEP implementation during the past year and a half. Parents are now claiming violations of IDEA rights and are seeking to be made whole. This breakout session will focus on the law regarding compensatory educational services and strategies to address and mitigate claims.

Data Breach Response Breakout Session

As more personal information is collected, stored, and transmitted electronically, public institutions have become the prime targets of cybercriminals. The growth of technology in the classroom and increased use of school-provided devices to enable virtual learning and work-from-home during the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated these vulnerabilities.

Are you prepared to respond to a cyber-attack or inadvertent data breach in your own school?

This breakout session will take you step-by-step through a data breach response, including several legal and practical solutions for school districts and BOCES.
